Ennahdha (Rebirth) was established, illegally, on 6 June 1981 as the Movement
of Islamic Trend, to be renamed to its current name in February 1989.
Legalized on 1 March 2011 by the Government of National Union, Ennahdha was the
most voted party in the election for the Constituent Assembly held the same year
(1,501,320 votes; 37%), securing 89 seats (out of 217). Hamadi Jebali was
appointed Head of the Government on 24 December 2011; the assassination of the
lawyer Chokri Belaïd, a virulent opponent of Ennahdha, forced Jebali's
governement to resign on 19 February 2013. The new governement chaired by
another member of Ennahdha, Ali Larayedh, fell down after the assassination of
the MP Mohamed Brahmi on 25 July 2013.
In the 2014 general election,
Ennahdha was defeated by Nidaa Tounes, being the 2nd most voted party (947,034
votes; 27.8%) and securing only 69 seats at the Assembly of People's
Representatives. The party entered the coalition government led by Nidaa Tounes.
In the 2019 presidential election, Abdelfattah Mourou was the third most voted
candidate in the first round (434,530 votes; 12.9%) and could not advance to the
second round. Ennahdha won the general elections that followed, obtaining 19.6%
of the votes and securing 52 seats. Ennahdha is part of the coalition
governement led by Elyes Fakhfkah (Ettakatol), which was inaugurated on 27
February 2020.
Once closely connected with the ultra-conservative Muslim
Brotherhood, Ennahdha claims to be "not an Islamist but an Islamic party" and to
reject theocracy, often quoting the Turkish AKP as a its model.
During its
10th congress held in May 2016, the party was self-styled as "Democrat Muslims",
a claimed separation of religion and politic that did not convince most of its
opponents.
